The butter mom aesthetic is all about soft simplicity, ease, and a lived-in kind of polish that still feels practical for everyday life. It leans into warm neutrals, relaxed silhouettes, and breathable fabrics that move easily through busy days without feeling overdone. What Is a 90s Butter Mom?

butter mom style

This summer, I started seeing content about the 90s butter mom aesthetic. The name was catchy, fun, and a bit intriguing. The style is characterized by:

  • high-rise light-wash jeans
  • ribbed tanks + soft tees
  • oversized button-down shirts
  • linen pieces (shirts, pants, dresses)
  • claw clips for hair + minimal jewelry
  • sneakers or sandals
  • a relaxed, slightly oversized fit throughout

A 90s butter mom is calm, steady, and unhurried. She values practicality over trends, keeps things simple, and is deeply present for everyday moments. She values comfort, home, and family rhythms over hustle culture. Furthermore, she is resourceful, frugal, and finds beauty in ordinary, repetitive life. It sounds like a lifestyle I desire to emulate.

Since having my third baby, I have been in a bit of a style rut, resorting to athletic clothes most days. Because I am drawn to the easy, effortless, lived-in-but-slightly-styled butter mom aesthetic, I am embracing it this summer with some new pieces from Quince!

About Quince

Quince is a direct-to-consumer brand known for offering high-quality, timeless wardrobe staples at accessible prices by working directly with manufacturers and focusing on natural and premium materials. Their collections lean minimalist and elevated, with an emphasis on essentials like linen, cashmere, silk, and organic cotton. Their goal is simple: well-made pieces without traditional retail markups.

A Quince capsule wardrobe is especially appealing for the butter mom aesthetic because the brand focuses on slow fashion principles like natural fibers, classic silhouettes, and versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched throughout the season. Read this post for getting started with slow fashion on a budget.

I have loved and purchased from Quince for years. From their clothing to their bedding to their curtains, I can attest to both the beauty and quality of their pieces.

My Sizing

I am 5’6″ and I usually wear size small or medium, depending on the brand. I ordered most of my pieces from Quince in a size small; however, I wish I had ordered a size up especially in the tops. While they fit perfectly initially, I did experience some shrinkage. So if you are between sizes or prefer a slightly looser look, try sizing up.

Quince Pieces I Ordered for my 90s Butter Mom Capsule Wardrobe

Quince generously sent me some new pieces to try for my summer wardrobe, and I paired them with some Quince pieces that I already own, love, and wear often!

100% European Linen Cropped Tank in Brown Gingham and Flax

This brown linen tank is one of my favorite tops I own. I love the small brown checkered pattern, the flattering fit, and the comfort of linen in the summer. Some linen is scratchy and feels cheap, but this linen is soft from the first wear, gets softer with each wash, and is thick enough not to be see-through.

Additionally, I love the delicate button closure at the back of the shirt. My only complaint is that it did shrink lengthwise quite a bit in the wash, so I think I would order up a size next time. I love styling this tank with jeans, shorts, and linen pants. Quince frequently re-adds items so stay on the lookout if the color you want is out of stock!

I also got the tank in Flax. It’s simple and pairs well with pretty much anything. It is also available in black and white and a few other colors.

Cotton Viscose Voile Raglan Short Sleeve Blouse in Classic Mini Gingham

I am a sucker for tiny gingham patterns. This black gingham top is loose enough to be casual but can be dressed up thanks to the puffed sleeves and button details. I like to style it with both denim shorts and jeans. This top reminds me of a similar silhouette from Dôen, but for a fraction of the cost.

Bella Stretch Vintage Shorts in Atlantic Blue and Ghost White

I ordered these shorts in both Atlantic blue denim and white. The white pair is definitely more fitted than the blue, so I ordered those a size up. I got a 27 in the blue and a 28 in the white. For a looser look, I highly recommend sizing up. My weight fluctuates throughout the month, and I think a larger size would be a more consistently comfortable option.

100% European Linen Pants in Deep Navy

These linen pants have been in my closet for years, and they are such an easy wardrobe staple. I treat blue as a neutral in my wardrobe, and I love pairing these with loose linen tanks and cotton tees. They are comfortable, keep me cool, and, as a mom of three, I appreciate the elastic waistband!

If you’re building a Quince capsule wardrobe, a pair of linen pants is one of the most versatile pieces you can own. They work with tanks, tees, and button-downs while keeping you comfortable during the hottest months of the year.

Bella Stretch Wide Leg Jeans in Seaside Blue

Although not pictured, these are my favorite jeans that I currently own. They have a little bit of elastane, which adds some stretch, but they still hold their shape after weekly washes. I wear these year-round, and they are loose enough to be comfortable even on breezy summer days.

I love pairing them with any of the tops I mentioned above for an effortless yet put-together look. Additionally, I believe I ordered the short length for a cropped fit. You can customize the look you want by choosing a long or short length.

100% European Linen Shorts in Taupe, Bayberry Olive, and Classic Mini Gingham

These breezy linen shorts are comfortable, cute, and versatile. I ordered them in three colors! I bought them in a small and think I should have sized up to a medium for a looser fit.

Also, I appreciate that even the lighter colors are not see-through and how effortless these shorts look. They are more fitted and shorter if you buy your true size, so if you’re going for a relaxed look, size up at least one size. The drawstring and elastic waistband make these shorts especially versatile.

How to Style the Butter Mom Aesthetic

Keep it effortless. Keep it simple. Don’t over-accessorize.

Wear loose, oversized button-downs that can easily be thrown on and taken off as the weather changes.

Choose comfortable, simple sandals that you can quickly kick off. Or better yet, go barefoot!

Use a claw clip to pin back loose waves, leaving a few face-framing pieces at the front.

If you choose to wear jewelry, opt for simple, minimal pieces like gold hoops, studs, and delicate necklaces—perhaps featuring your children’s birthstones.

Other Pieces for This 90s Butter Mom Capsule Wardrobe
