What is Azure Standard?

Azure Standard is a bulk-food coop that offers organic and non-gmo food, household, and garden goods. It was started by a man named David Stelzer. He was from a farming family and they had a history of health problems that made working on the farm difficult.

David and his grandfather changed to a whole foods diet which significantly improved their health. This led to David becoming passionate about organic, whole food. Eventually, David started Azure Standard because he wanted to make this food more available to people across the U.S. at an affordable cost.

Read more about Azure Standard’s history here.

What Does Azure Standard Offer?

So many things! Azure offers organic food, health and beauty items, household items, supplements, garden items, and more! For food, they offer countless options in lots of sizes including baking items, canned items, drinks, boxed meals, breads, dried food, dairy, condiments, dehydrated foods, eggs, fresh produce, meat, gluten and dairy free options, seasonings, and more! They also offer beauty products, natural household cleaners, vegetable starts, and more.

I prefer to buy bulk dried and frozen food from Azure along with storage solutions for these items. Additionally, I will occasionally order dairy and beauty items. I prefer to order meat and produce locally, but I love that Azure has them as an option!

How Does Azure Standard Work?

Azure Standard is a a bulk-food coop. They do not have a traditional storefront, but they do ship food across the United States to countless locations. You can opt to have the items shipped directly to you, but the shipping is pricier this way.

What I recommend, is signing up for a “drop location.” Check at the bottom of their website under Join In, Find a Drop to find the closest drop near you, and if there isn’t one—consider starting your own! For most places, the Azure truck will come once a month to your drop location… perhaps at a local gas station or parking lot depending on your location. Some drops are weekly or bi-weekly, but the ones in my area are once a month. Everyone who ordered helps unload the truck and puts the food into piles by name. Then, you pick up your boxes and go!

It’s not as convenient as ordering online or at a grocery store, but the cost and health benefits are more than worth it!

Unfortunately, the time for the drops changes. You’ll be notified about a week in advance for the day and time of your drop. If you can’t make it, you could have someone else pick it up or you. In my experience, the people who order from Azure are extremely kind and helpful!

Do You Have to Join a Membership and Pay Monthly Fees to Get an Azure Standard Haul?

You do have to make an account with Azure so that the drop coordinator can contact you if needed. However, there are no monthly fees or order minimums required!

How Often I Order an Azure Standard Haul

I order from Azure Standard about every 3-4 months. Currently, we get our food from a combination of places: beef and pork from a local farmer, fresh produce from our garden, bulk food from Azure Standard, and weekly groceries to supplement (usually from Aldi)

Some people go every month, but I prefer to order mostly in bulk from Azure and I find that I don’t need to go monthly. Eventually, I might switch over to ordering more of our regular grocery items from Azure but for now, ordering those items (not in bulk) is more affordable from a local grocery store.

My Recent Azure Standard Haul

It had been a few months since my last Azure Standard haul, and I wanted to order some items we were out of plus a few new things to try! I personally like getting ideas for orders from other blogs and on Youtube. It can be hard to narrow it down because they have so many options, and I like reading reviews of other people’s favorites that I normally wouldn’t think to order!

Wide Mouth Glass Gallon Jars (4) $18.77

bulk food storage

We use these glass jars to store bulk food in our working pantry and the rest goes in our root cellar in 5 gallon, food-grade buckets. I had eight already but found that I had a few other items I wanted to have easily accessible in our kitchen! Azure offers the best quality and most affordable options for these glass jars.

Wide Mouth Gallon Jar Lids (6) $6.92

azure standard products

The jars do not come with lids, so I ordered a few extra in a set. I love the look of the muted gold color in my kitchen!

Organic Cane Sugar (25 lbs) $29.99

bulk food haul

I know, 25 pounds sounds like a lot of sugar! But, when you cook a lot of food from scratch and have honeybees, you actually go through it pretty fast! We mix sugar and water together to feed our bees in the colder months, and I use quite a bit of sugar for baking and canning. It will take a while for us to go through all of this, but I’d rather have it on hand! I also can’t find organic sugar at an affordable price near me, so this is a great option!

Whole Milk Mozzarella Cheese (6 lb) $23.51

bulk food order

This is a huge block of cheese! My family loves dairy, and we usually buy pre-shredded cheese from Aldi. I recently learned that shedded cheese has a lot of additives, so I want to start shredding my own. However, I will still buy pre-shredded for convenience from time-to-time, but I’m slowly working on changing this!

I have price-checked high quality cheeses, and Azure is more expensive than Aldi with some of their cheeses—even when buying in bulk. However, this mozzarella was on sale and was more affordable than a lot of the other dairy options!

I’m planning on cutting it into smaller chunks—the size we would use in one week—and will vacuum seal and freeze them until time to use! I plan to use this cheese for homemade pizza, paninis, and on pasta.

Organic Frozen Cranberries (5 lb) $14.57

bulk food delivery

Last Christmas, we made homemade cranberry juice and gave it as gifts to family and friends. Our local stores don’t currently have cranberries because they are not in season, so I decided to order these organic, frozen cranberries from Azure to make juice. Cranberry juice is one of the simplest things to can, and it is honestly so good! I can make it much cheaper than I can buy it, and it only takes a few ingredients.

Organic Spaghetti (5 lb) $14.57

organic bulk food

My kids love spaghetti noodles, and even though I make our own pasta sometimes with this pasta maker—I wanted to have a quick option for busy nights. This organic spaghetti was a great price and will last us for months!

Organic Lemon Juice (16 oz) $5.53

organic lemon juice

I use lemon juice when canning jam and I just ran out. Another blogger recommended this brand, and I am so excited to try it when canning!

Baking Soda (1 lb) $3.15

bulk food order

I probably need to buy a bigger size because this is my third time ordering baking soda from Azure! I use baking soda for baking and cleaning, and we go through it pretty fast.

Organic Dried Garbanzo Beans (5 lb) $12.63

azure standard beans

I absolutely love roasted chickpeas, and we go through the cans so quickly! I wanted to stock up on some dried beans to always have on hand!

Humphrey’s Organic Facial Toner Witch Hazel Calm & Clarify with Lavender (8 oz) $9.34

organic facial toner

I have a pretty simple skincare routine, but with all of the dirt and sweat that comes with gardening in the summer, I wanted to take it up a notch with a good toner! I use this soap for my face followed by this toner and homemade whipped tallow balm.

This toner smells so good and is really gentle on my skin! It comes in a variety of scents, but I personally love how calming the lavender is for my skin.

Order Total with Shipping: $150.92

We usually try to spend between $50-$100 on our weekly groceries. By buying in bulk, we are able to cut down on our weekly costs and it saves us money… and trips to the grocery store over time!
