Why We Got the Chickcozy Automatic Chicken Coop Door
This is our second year raising backyard chickens. One of our first purchases for them was an automatic coop door. We initially bought this solar powered one because we thought it would work well for when we went out of town. This was because it didn’t require any battery changes or outlets.
It was also less expensive than some of the other models on the market. Often times, it’s better to invest in a high-quality item from the start!
Well, the door worked great most of the time. However, it rarely opened or closed on rainy, cloudy days without someone manually opening it. This led to us losing half of our flock to a raccoon one night because we didn’t realize that it hadn’t closed.
This summer, we have been converting our old shed into a chicken coop/garden shed combo. While the idea of a solar-powered coop door is nice, its inconsistency made it less than ideal.
I did some research about other options for automatic chicken coop doors. Through my research, I found that the Chickcozy door had great reviews! I wanted to try it with our new coop, and so far–I am more than happy with the results!
Features of the Chickcozy Automatic Chicken Coop Door
Here are a few of the Chickcozy Chicken Door Features:
- Built-in Ultra-precise Sensors
- Easy to Install
- Multiple Modes
- Powerful Electric Motor
- Powered by Battery or Outlet
- Works in All Weather Conditions
We have been really impressed by the design, quality, and ease of installation. Our chickens started using the food from day one!

Chickcozy Door Pros
We love that the Chickcozy Coop Door opens horizontally instead of vertically. This means that the chickens are less likely to get caught in the door when it closes.
While the coop door offers both battery and outlet power, we opted for the battery option. We don’t have a working outlet close by the coop, so this feature was a positive!
The door comes with the battery and shows how much battery life is left. We were surprised that the battery life was still at 100% after several days.
Although it does require a little more maintenance than a solar-powered door, it is much less likely to have issues–especially during bad weather.
Our previous door required setting it at the exact time of day, so we had to wait until that time of day to get it set up correctly. The Chickcozy door has the option to set the timer so that you can get everything done at once. Also, you can easily make adjustments as the seasons change!

Chickcozy Door Cons
Although there are more pros than cons in my opinion, there are a few things that you might want to consider before purchasing the Chickcozy Coop Door.
The door does not have a solar powered option, so you’ll either have to have a way to plug it in or remember to check the batteries. As I mentioned before, solar-powered doors are not always reliable, so this wasn’t a problem for us.
Another con is that the Chickcozy Automatic Chicken Coop Door is currently only available in two colors. It comes in both orange and green, and I opted for green because it is more neutral option. While this is not a major con, it is something that could impact your design choices for your coop.
Neither of these cons are deal-breakers in my opinion. We actually prefer the battery-operated coop door to the solar powered one, and I like that there are a few options as far as colors go!
Installation of the Chickcozy Automatic Chicken Coop Door
We are in the process of putting up new siding on our chicken coop, so my husband installed two sheets of smart siding to get started. This enabled him to also install the new Chickcozy Automatic Chicken Coop Door.
For installation, he first put up the siding. Then, he measured and cut out an 8.13 inches x 10.4 inches rectangle per the manual.
He popped it out, and then installed the automatic door over top of the entrance. He used a level to get it straight. Then, he used an impact driver to install the included screws.
He then built a ladder for the chickens to get to the door using scrap cedar that we had leftover from another project.
My husband said that the door was very easy to install–much simpler than the previous automatic door that we had due to the design.
