Cheap vs. Investment Tomato Cages
My first year with a big garden had a lot of expenses. We were starting from scratch and had to spend quite a bit to get it established. Compost, trellises, fertilizers, tools. There wasn’t a lot left over in our budget to buy tomato cages.
So, I bought the cheapest ones I could find. Unfortunately, by the end of one season they were mangled and tangled and pretty much useless.
This year, Epic Gardening generously sent me some of their heavy-duty tomato cages. And let me tell you–the difference is incredible.
The wire is truly heavy duty. Instead of being circular these tomato cages are rectangular. This gives you more room at the base of the trellis, and they can be folded up for easy storage at the end of the season!

Set Up for these Heavy Duty Tomato Cages
The set up for these tomato cages is super simple! Each tomato cage comes in two parts to make it easier to ship.
Simply unfold the base and put the top into the four bars. You can also fold it when it is assembled! At the end of the season, I’m going to hang it in my garden shed on s-hooks like this on our wire shelves.

Who These Heavy Duty Tomato Cages are Good For
If you are on a tight budget and plan to grow lots of tomatoes, this product is probably not your best option. These cages are not cheap–two for $49–however, they are more durable and easier to store than most tomato cages!
If you have a small garden with a few tomatoes, these Epic Gardening tomato cages would be perfect! They are aesthetically pleasing and would fit will in a raised bed.
As mentioned before, they are easy to store which is a plus if you are tight on space! They may be more expensive than the $8 cages at your local garden store, but they last for years and years and won’t need replaced each season!
Another option, which is my plan, is to use these cages for some of my tomatoes and to try making some like this to supplement them! At the end of the season, I’ll compare the effectiveness and perhaps add some more heavy-duty tomato cages from Epic Gardening to my collection over time!

Other Epic Gardening Product Recommendations
I also have this grow light from Epic Gardening. While it isn’t large, it is perfect for beginner-seed starting! Out of all of my grow lights, this one was the most effective. It is easy to transport and doesn’t require a shelf to set it up!
Additionally, I’ve heard great things from other gardeners and homesteaders about these products:
- Birdie Beds (durable raised garden beds)
- GreenStalk
- Seed Starting Trays
