As I am working to build a sustainable wardrobe that I love, I always consider how much wear I will get out of an item before purchasing it. I no longer buy dresses specific to an occasion (with the exception of bridesmaid dresses) unless I know I will be able to re-wear it.
We are attending a Christmas Eve service with my extended family this year, and I am looking forward to celebrating with our loved ones. For our Christmas Eve outfits, my goal is to use what we already own but to make it a little special with some fun, festive touches!
I have been holding on to this dress that belonged to my mom in the 90s. It is classic and timeless, flattering and versatile. I’m planning on pairing it with tights and a cream-colored turtleneck with balloon sleeves that I made out of an organic waffle knit last year. (The pattern is the Arlo Turtleneck by Petite Stitchery). As always, I’ll be pairing it with my Almond Carmen Chelsea boots from Nisolo. When I find a brand I love, I stick with it!
You can use my code THEMILLERACRES25 to save 25% on all items at Nisolo–including their sale items. They also have a special and limited promo where you can get 10 pairs of Nisolo products for $50 each which you can read about here!
I’m planning on dressing up the outfit with some red lipstick which is more bold than what I would typically reach for but seems fitting for the occasion. I’m also planning on adding a red ribbon in my hair to make the outfit more festive and to tie in with my lip color.
I was hoping to purchase black tights because mine got a hole in them, but I didn’t order them in time. I tried checking locally, but they were out of my size when I checked some local stores, so my old grey-sweater tights will have to do!
You could also add the Nisolo Noemi belt in Almond and Convertible Cleo Crossbody purse in Almond for accessories. I decided to keep it simple, but I love that this outfit is versatile and can be dressed up with accessories!
My son will be wearing a pair of jeans and a plaid button down that I bought secondhand from ThredUp. I was planning on pairing it with a raglan sweater that I made for him last year in an organic rib knit, but I decided to go with the olive waffle-knit dolman I made him to bring in some green to our color palette.
My daughter will be wearing the dress that she will be wearing to my sisters’ wedding a few days after Christmas with a bow, handmade bloomers, and some Jamie Kay tights I purchased on sale this summer. They go with everything and are a perfect winter staple! I found her dress on Poshmark, and it is a timeless, vintage cream knit dress with lace details along the neckline. Her bloomers are made from the same fabric as my son’s dolman, and these are the little shoes I bought for her.
Carson will be wearing his gray Everlane sweater (we purchased secondhand on Poshmark), dark-wash jeans, and a checkered button down that matches my dress. He and I will be wearing pretty neutral outfits, and we’ll add pops of color in with the kids’ outfits and accessories.
The only items that we bought to complete our Christmas outfits were Lincoln’s jeans and shirt—but I know that these are items he will be able to re-wear in the future, including for my sister’s rehearsal dinner next week. I purchased them secondhand from Thredup because it was more affordable and it is a way to give old clothes another chance to be worn and used!
If you are scrambling to find something to wear this Christmas, I recommend starting with some classic neutrals that you already have in your closet and accessorize with muted pops of red and green. You don’t have to spend a lot to create a festive, cohesive look for your family.
