It has been over two years since we closed on our fixer-upper farmhouse on a few acres. Sometimes, I look around and see all of the work that needs to be done, but my husband reminds me of how far we have come in a few years! I find comfort in knowing that homes are ever evolving and are never quite “done.” Good things take time, and the love and work we pour into our home with the little pockets of time we have is not a waste. This post is all about our fixer-upper farmhouse renovations–before and after!
Read to the end for an amazing resource that will save your sanity and potentially thousands of dollars on your own home renovation!
Interior Farmhouse Renovations
The following are renovations that we did on the interior of our fixer-upper farmhouse. These farmhouse renovation before and after pictures show how much work we did in a short amount of time with the help of an amazing contractor!
Sunroom
We didn’t do anything major to this room, but adding some cozy furniture, bookshelves, and string lights makes it a cozy place to curl up with a good book a cup of coffee. See more of our enclosed porch renovation HERE.
Living Room Farmhouse Renovations
My in-laws helped us paint and brighten up our living room. We also put new hardwood floors throughout the entire first floor. We used vintage and thrifted floral artwork on the far wall. This room is dark and gets very limited light, so we wanted to make it feel like you were looking outside into a beautiful flower field!
Kids Playroom
Our kids playroom is part of the living room. We think there may have been a wall separating the two rooms at one time; however, now it is one big room. I use a toy rotation system in order to keep the room tidy. Although it would be nice to have a separate playroom, I do love having the kids close in a part of the house where we all can be together!
Dining Room
Our contractor added a bathroom upstairs and lowered the ceiling by 2 feet to account for the plumbing.
Additionally, we added beadboard, wallpaper, and a new chandelier. This is probably our most-used room in the house! It has come such a long way.
Kitchen Farmhouse Renovations
We still need to re-paint our kitchen, but we added new countertops, a new sink, a backsplash, and a new dishwasher shortly after moving in. Recently, we replaced our old oven and tiny refrigerator! See more of this renovation HERE.
Bathroom 1 Farmhouse Renovations
This bathroom has come such a long way! Pretty much the entire bathroom was redone. We shopped secondhand for the sink to add a vintage touch! See the rest of this renovation HERE.
Stairwell
We ripped plywood and wallpaper off of the walls, added texture, and painted them white. Also, we added an organizational cabinet for toys and homeschool supplies.
We painted the stairs and handrail. We have plans of adding wallpaper and boxing in the pipes that are still visible. Someday!
Toy Storage Area
This is the area where we store most of the kids toys. It is located in the stairwell at the base of the stairs. We love having minimal, open ended toys. Additionally, I loosely follow the Montessori method with my kids. We purchased this bookshelf secondhand, and I used bins and baskets that I already had on hand! Eventually, I’d love for them all to match, but this is a frugal way for me to organize our home! Here are some other basket ideas if you are looking for toy-storage options!
Bathroom 2 Farmhouse Renovations
This room underwent the most transformation. What was once a small bedroom is now a beautiful, vintage inspired bathroom with a double-slipper clawfoot tub! See more of the process for this bedroom to bathroom renovation transformation HERE.
Bedroom 1
We haven’t done much to our bedroom, but we did paint the floors and my mother-in-law graciously painted our walls for us! It didn’t even have doors when we bought the house, so I would say that this was a big change! We added vintage farmhouse glass doors that we bought secondhand! We had to replace the broken glass in one of them, but they look like they have always been in the home!
Bedroom 2
This loft is now enclosed into a bedroom! When we bought the house, it was a huge safety issue. That ledge led to a huge drop-off over the stairs. Walling this in was one of our non-negotiable when renovating our home. My husband and his uncle built a closet… we’ll finish it someday! He also built a floor, Montessori-style bed! It’s tiny and cozy, but it is not where my kids spend the majority of the time.
Bedroom 3
We haven’t done much to this room other than paint it, but it is nice to have it as a guest room! We bought this bed from Ikea which pulls out to become a king sized trundle.
Hallway
I couldn’t find a before photo because this hallway didn’t exist before! It was an open loft. I added a during and after to show the results. We closed in the loft and added wallpaper and a mini split!
Our AC doesn’t work well upstairs and this was the most affordable and effective option. We slept in the living room on the couch for 3 months–while I was very pregnant–one summer because it was miserably hot! The mini split was well-worth the investment.
Outside Farmhouse Renovations
We did a tremendous amount of inside renovations, but we also did a lot to fix up our land! Here are some before and after pictures of our farmhouse land renovations.
Garden
What was once a bare patch of weeds is now where we grow most of our produce! We also added a mini orchard which will eventually become a food forest. Here’s how we set up our no-till garden and made our DIY cattle panel trellises.
Chicken Coop
Although it still needs some work, what was once a broken chicken coop full of weeds and debris is now home to our 11 hens!
