Something that I love about homesteading is how it brings people together.

This week, we took eggs to our next door neighbor, and he brought us all of his old cartons. One of our neighbors helped us repair our driveway, and we give his family fresh produce from our garden regularly.

As a kid, we knew our neighbors. They were some of the people that we spent the most time with.

But now, it’s more common than not to barely know the people you live next to.

If you have a garden or know how to bake, grow or make a little extra.

The relationships you will make in return are priceless!

We have regular conversations in our house about how we can share the load when it comes to caring for our children, our home, and our homestead.

We have a 3-year-old and 1-year-old, and while we try to involve them as much as possible—some projects just aren’t safe for kids to be present for.

My husband and I regularly communicate with each other about the projects on our to-do list and then block off time to get those done.

I have a confession to make. I’m a rule followe

I have a confession to make.

I’m a rule follower, except when it comes to recipes.

I just can’t help tweaking them a bit to make them my own!

I was craving a creamy soup, so i found a starting point recipe online and adjusted using ingredients I had on hand!

Unfortunately I didn’t exactly write down my own measurements, but here’s a close estimate!

Here’s how to make this Creamy Sausage Kale Soup ⬇️

Ingredients:
* 1 lb. sausage
* 1 onion
* 4 garlic cloves
* 1 sweet potato
* 2 c black beans
* 6 c bone broth
* 4 c water
* 4 c kale
* 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
* Salt + pepper to taste
* 1.5 c heavy whipping cream
* 1/4 c lemon juice
* 1 c mozzarella
* 1/2 c Parmesan
* 1 tbsp butter

* For dairy free, sub butter with olive oil and cream with coconut milk

Directions
1. Dice + chop all of the produce
2. Cook the sausage, season with salt + pepper
3. Add sausage and sweet potatoes to bone broth and water. Bring to a gentle boil.
4. Cook garlic, onion, and mushrooms in butter until soft. Add to pot.
5. Reduce pot to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes, covered.
6. Add in kale. Cook for 5 minutes.
7. Stir in cream, lemon juice, cheese, and seasonings to taste!

Again, I didn’t exactly measure so you might need to taste it as you go!

An affordable, sustainable way to make your home smell like fall 🍂

🍁 INGREDIENTS

- a few apples
- rosemary sprigs
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 5 drops of orange essential oil
- a sprinkle of nutmeg
- a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice
- enough water to cover

🍁 DIRECTIONS

- Chop the apples
- Add everything to the pot
- Bring to a boil
- Reduce to a simmer
- Enjoy!

Sometimes I add oranges or cranberries depending on what I have at home!

Slow living doesn’t mean that you sit around doi

Slow living doesn’t mean that you sit around doing nothing all day.

It’s quite the opposite actually.

I don’t think working hard—when paired with rest—is a negative thing.

But personally, I don’t want to spend my time over-working in order to pay for an escape from my life.

And I recognize that this is coming from a place of privilege. Many people are working extremely hard just to get by. I’m referring to working beyond what is necessary in order to afford an escape from your current life.

We have made a lot of financial sacrifices to live the lifestyle that we do. Our cars are old. Our house needs repairs. We don’t go on very many vacations beyond traveling to visit family.

But we love it here. It doesn’t feel like a place we need to escape from. It feels like home.

The time that you spend cultivating an environment of peace, love, and security within your home matters.

It matters for your family, for your friends, for yourself.

So I encourage you, friend, to consider what you are pouring your time and energy into.

And while vacations are nice, there is something so incredibly special about the simplicity of creating a life at home where you genuinely love to be.
