Home renovations can be overwhelming and it is easy to overspend, but it is possible to enjoy the process and stay within your budget.

In 2021, we bought a fixer-upper farmhouse on a few acres. When we bought it, it was extremely neglected and very overgrown.

Over the last year, with the help of an amazing contractor, we took our house from this to this, this to this, and this to this.

We learned a lot about home renovations along the way—how to budget, how to stay organized, and how to enjoy the process instead of getting overwhelmed.

Groceries have been incredibly expensive recently, and we are trying to cut our costs! We started off the year with a commitment to budgeting in order to save for some home renovation projects and homesteading goals. I’ve been going to this little nature museum eve

I’ve been going to this little nature museum ever since I was a kid, but this was the first time I stopped to read this sign.

It stopped me in my tracks, and I read it over and over—mulling the words around in my head, pondering the depth of their meaning.

In an age driven by technology, it’s not only hard to slow down and notice beauty in nature—it takes discipline and intention. It’s so much easier to sit and scroll than to be still and notice a meadowlarks song or the way the prairie grasses dance in the breeze.

New developments keep popping up, we spend more and more time pursuing bigger and better, and we rush from one event to the next. At least I know I often do.

But today, we lingered a little longer at the nature center. We learned that bison hooves stir up the dirt and help spread native seeds. We read books about raccoons and stood still long enough to find little lizards and turtles hiding behind the rocks. We made friends with the volunteers and took time to listen to and glean knowledge from their experiences.

There is so much my kids don’t yet understand—so much I myself do not understand. We could spend a lifetime learning about and exploring this beautiful world that God created and still barely scratch the surface.

So, as a mom… I am challenging myself to look for ways to #cultivateconnectionathome with my family. To teach my kids that there is value in learning the names of birds and how to grow a garden and to choose to see the beauty in a state known for being really flat and somewhat boring. To seek to understand, to learn to love, and to work to conserve this beautiful place that we get to call home.

Cultivating connection doesn’t require lots of money or the latest technology—honestly that often hinders it. Children are natural learners, and I think we as adults have a lot we can learn from their eagerness to explore and their sense of wonder.

Here are some of the supplies we are using to start seeds indoors for our no-till garden this year! We are in zone 6b and will be starting celery, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, onions, asparagus, peppers, tomatoes, and brussel sprouts indoors, and the rest will be directly sown in our garden.

We have a lot to learn but are loving the process! I’m mostly growing @trueleafmarket seeds and love how their website provides so many helpful resources.

Feeling extra grateful for this man today.

This week, Carson has been balancing an extra busy season at work and hosting people multiple nights this week. When he gets off of work, he spends time doing just this—intentionally investing in our kids. That and listening to me verbally process every event of the day in addition to supporting all of my crazy ideas like a big garden and chickens and starting seeds indoors 😅 On nights when we hosted, he automatically picked up the vacuum, ran to the store for groceries, and asked how he could help.

There is so much strength in his humility, and I am praying that we can raise our kids in the same way ❤️

Here’s how we are prepping for our first no-till

Here’s how we are prepping for our first no-till garden!

1. Order Seeds… we got some of ours from a local garden center and the rest from @trueleafmarket! I ordered a mix of veggies, herbs, and pollinator flowers!
2. Gather Supplies… we are starting some of our seeds indoors this year, so we had to get some supplies. Send me a message if you want the links for what we are using!
3. Gather Cardboard… the kids and I made friends with some of the employees at our local feed supply store. They have been giving us lots of free cardboard without any dyes, and we promised to repay them with some fresh veggies… so let’s hope our garden works out!
4. Research Compost… we need 6 inches of compost to cover the cardboard in the areas we are planting seeds. I scheduled a free chip-drop for our garden pathways, but we will need a lot of compost for the beds. I’m spending time getting quotes for the best and most affordable compost in my city.

We are new to no-till gardening, but from what I have read, it is more affordable than raised beds and if done well, really improves the soil health and overall harvest! We have a lot to learn, but I am so excited about the process!
