About the Merly Sustainable Denim Jacket
This is my second Merly Jacket from ABLE. I have it in two colors and two sizes, which I will share about in depth below. I’m still figuring out my sizing with ABLE, but I have been more than impressed by the quality and craftsmanship of their products.
This denim jacket is mid-weight and is a perfect year-round layering piece! The jacket in these pictures is a size small in the color Clean Wash.
Color Options for this Sustainable Denim Jacket
This sustainable denim jacket is currently available in four colors: sunbleached, original wash, clean wash, and washed black.
Sunbleached is very light denim and is perfect for spring and summer.
Original wash and clean wash are very similar in color; however, the original wash has some distressing throughout. I think these two are the most versatile due to their classic, lived-in denim look.
The washed black denim is somewhat muted and looks great for fall and winter!
Merly Jacket Sizing and Fit
ABLE Clothing describes this jacket as an, “easy fitting denim jacket with a slim arm, dropped shoulder, and a relaxed fit throughout the body.
For reference, I am 5’6” and my pre-pregnancy size was typically a small.
Prior to this pregnancy, I ordered the jacket in a size XS as shown in this post because a lot of the reviews said it was oversized. While I love the jacket, I wish I would have sized up to a small because I was unable to button the jacket and the arms felt a bit tight.
ABLE generously offered to send me a new jacket to review, and I ordered a size small. While it does fit much better than the XS, I should have sized up to a Medium for it to truly fit my 9-months-pregnant body. I also think the Medium would be better for layering because the arms on this jacket are more fitted.
The arms are a bit snug and I definitely can’t button it right now, but it is still wearable and is a nice layering piece. I think the small will fit more comfortably when I am no longer pregnant.
Because this denim is non-stretch, I would recommend ordering your typical size unless you want a really fitted look. If you want to layer the jacket with sweaters or anything thicker than a t-shirt, sizing up one size would be helpful.
Sustainability Impact
This sustainable denim jacket is handmade in Mexico. ABLE employs over 550 women in Mexico with fair wages. According to ABLE, “They clean all water used in the production process in their waste water treatment plant.”
