My Search for Custom Blackout Curtains
I have always been a bit hesitant to try blackout curtains. I absolutely love light filtering into my home, and our current house has several rooms that are not well-lit. Blackout curtains do not allow for as much natural light even when open.
Additionally, when I became a mom I did not want my kids to become reliant on a completely dark room for naps. We often travel to see family and I had high hopes that blackout curtains were not necessary.
While my kids did learn to nap without complete darkness, my third child started waking up at the crack of dawn once he became more alert. He also became more resistant to taking naps during the daytime. So, we decided it was time to try true blackout curtains to help our baby improve his sleep and to ensure our family was getting enough rest.

If you have an older home similar to mine, your windows may not be the standard size. What I Ordered from TheHues
I ordered the 4 Layer Linen Blend Heavyweight Soundproof Thermal 100% Blackout Anti-Dust Jacquard Custom Curtains in the color Ambient/Moss. These curtains have a greenish tint and are made of a polyester/linen blend.
Pros
These heavyweight curtains have many positives. Here are a few of the things that stood out to me the most.
True Blackout Curtains
As I mentioned above, we decided it was time to try true blackout curtains to help our baby sleep in longer. The first day we used these, my son slept past 8 a.m. when he had been waking up before 6 a.m. consistently prior to installing these blackout curtains. He also takes longer, sounder naps due to the curtains ability to create total darkness.
Layers
These curtains aren’t cheap due to their quality. These custom blackout curtains do not skimp on layers! The first and fourth layer are a water-resistant fabric. I had the choice of different options for the back layer, and I chose an identical fabric layer which looks beautiful from the outside of our house as well as the inside.
The second layer is a blackout felt lining which blocks any light that would get through the already heavyweight fabric. The third layer is an air purifying filter layer which is an added bonus for such thick curtains.
These curtains help block out sound, especially when combined with a sound machine like this. They are perfect for helping set the mood for good quality sleep.
Because these are thermal curtains, the inner materials are designed to help regulate temperature in the room–which is perfect for an older home.
Texture
The texture on these custom blackout curtains is beautiful. It has a subtle texture and various shades of greens, blues, and creams. Curtains these days are similar to clothes. Cheap, thin materials that fall apart after a few wears. These curtains are thick, insulate the room, and add a subtle elegant texture to your overall design.
Elevates the Space
These curtains took our primary bedroom from cozy and cute to elegant and sophisticated. Our room is a mixture of old and new and I think these curtains elevate the space and help create a timeless style.
4-in-1
I chose the 4-in-1 header for these curtains. It gives you the option of pin hooks, pleated hoods, clip hooks, or the rod pocket. I preferred the clip hooks like, but I love that I can switch up the look as needed. The curtains also come with matching tie back panels for convenience.
TheHues Blackout Curtain Cons
Although I love these curtains, here are a few things to note:
Weight
These curtains are truly heavy weight. It was a bit of an adjustment to go from light airy curtains to ones that are somewhat of a workout the open and close. However, we live in an older home and I like how these help insulate the room better as mentioned above. They also have a beautiful drape and look expensive.
Not Natural Materials
These curtains are marketed as a linen blend, but I didn’t realize that they are only 10% linen and 90% polyester. I do prefer natural materials due to their breathability and positive benefit on our environment. If you are looking for natural materials, TheHues does offer several options that are 100% linen in addition to other natural options.
Color Variance
I originally ordered these curtains for my kid’s room; however, they were heavier in weight and lighter in color than I expected. While the curtains appear green online, once I hung them up they appeared more silver.
I tried them in our primary bedroom which has light green walls in the color Mizzle by Farrow&Ball. In that setting, they pulled more green.
I highly recommend ordering free swatches from TheHues prior to ordering. This way, you can see the true color of the fabric in the environment you will put it in.
Choosing the Correct Curtain Size from TheHues
Choosing the correct curtain size is key to achieving a polished and functional window treatment. Start by measuring the width of your window and multiplying it by 1.5 to 3 times, depending on how full or gathered you want the curtains to look—more fabric creates a richer, more luxurious effect.
For length, decide whether you want the curtains to just kiss the floor, puddle slightly, or hover just above it. Standard lengths are 84″, 96″, and 108″, but custom sizes may be needed for non-standard windows or dramatic ceiling heights. Don’t forget to factor in the curtain rod placement—typically 4-6 inches above the window frame—to create the illusion of taller ceilings and a more elegant space.
Are Custom Curtains Worth the Cost?
These curtains were gifted to me but I am aware of their cost. I think the answer to this question will depend on your budget and current needs.
$500+ is a significant amount of money to spend on curtains. However, these are true blackout curtains that accomplish what they say they will do.
I also love to sew, and I am particular about fabric quality and garment construction. While not made entirely of natural fibers, these curtains are a thick, durable fabric. The texture is beautiful and can work well with a variety of colors. The stitching is also very high quality. There were no loose threads, the construction was even, and I can tell that these curtains will last for years to come.
Prior to installing these curtains, we had an inexpensive pair from Ikea. While I liked the light and airy look, these heavyweight blackout curtains instantly elevated the look of the room. It now feels elegant and purposefully pieced together.
Curtains often feel like one of the least important parts of a room, but they can instantly pull a room together. They can add a touch of elegance, whimsy, or coziness at once.
