In 2021, my husband and I found a fixer-upper farmhouse on 2.5 acres just inside of city limits. We had been through a job loss, a crazy house market, and a change of location. Buying a farmhouse was never something we had envisioned, but we were very excited about the prospect of taking on this new, very big project. I remember walking through the house prior to submitting an offer on it, and all that I could see was the potential. Little did I know how much planning, preparation, and organization goes into a home remodel!

Trying to Stay Organized During a Home Remodel
Carson and I had never renovated a house before. We had done a few projects at our previous home but nothing major. Over the last year, we have renovated almost every room in our home–doing some of the smaller projects ourselves and hiring an incredible contractor for the larger jobs. There is a lot that we have learned and wish that we would have known when we started–including the basic organization for planning out a remodel. Between getting quotes, sorting through samples, and dealing with everything that comes with renovating a home, it can be really overwhelming to try to keep up with it all. At one point during our renovation, I remember painting samples on a random piece of paper and then not being able to find them when I needed them. It would have saved us a lot of time and money if we would have been organized from the start.
Why We Created the Home Renovation Planner + Budget
Partway through our renovations, I decided to create a journal of sorts to organize the process of planning out a renovation from the initial inspiration to the gathering of estimates to the final execution of the project. I really enjoy the process and design aspects of renovating, and my husband is really frugal and good at creating budgets that help keep track of the expenses that go into a remodel. So, we decided to partner with each other on this project and create a planner that can be used to help layout the details when planning a remodel as well as an accompanying budget template that is completely customizable. This budget breaks down all of the individual components of each room and can be used for renovating a single room or an entire home. Both the home remodel planner and budget can be adapted whether you are doing your renovation yourself or hiring a contractor for some of the jobs like we did.
